Cigna – New CEO, New Strategies?

In a recent development in Cigna Corporation, David M. Cordani officially took the position of H. Edward Hanway as the chief executive of the company. Cordani resides several miles away from the insurer’s Philadelphia headquarters, but he promises no change in the corporate focus.
“I’ll be splitting my time between Connecticut and Philadelphia when I’m in the office,” said Cordani.
When asked about the happenings in Washington, Cordani explains that his company will be able to draw on its experiences abroad and that they will be able to deal with the changes well. Cigna’s global insurance business accounts for 10 percent of the company’s revenues. Currently, its Asian business is continuously rising.
For an instance, if the U.S. pursues something similar to government-run health care, Cigna can look at its product offerings in China where it sells insurance to individuals who want to enhance and upgrade government-provided care.
“In China, the government supplies basic access to health care,” Cordani said. “Hospital patients end up in wards with eight to 12 beds.”
Cigna’s experience in providing individual policies in Asia can make it easier for them to market similar policies here in U.S.
