Pennsylvania Gov.-elect Tom Corbett nominated a partner in the Saul Ewing law firm and former lawyer in the Pennsylvania Insurance Department to become the state’s next insurance commissioner.
Consedine’s appointment awaits a confirmation hearing by the state Senate.
“Michael Consedine has a reputation as a smart, creative attorney who works collaboratively and professionally,” said Corbett in a statement. “His vast experience and knowledge of the insurance industry and regulations will be a key asset as we move Pennsylvania into the future.”
After a three-year tenure, Joel Ario left in August 2010 to take an Obama Administration job setting up the health insurance exchanges included in the federal health reform law.

A report by consumer groups shows that most of the health insurance rate hikes approved last year in Florida wouldn’t be considered reasonable as early as July 1. That’s when a proposed provision of the federal Affordable Care Act is set to go into effect, requiring increases of more than 10 percent in the individual and small-group market to be justified and noticed to the public. (Large-group plans aren’t affected.) Attorneys general in 20 states have asked a federal judge to toss out the federal health reform law, saying it gives government too much power.
The suit, filed in Florida, is one of more than two dozen filed since the passage of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March. On Monday, a federal judge struck down the individual health insurance mandate, a central piece of the Obama administration’s landmark legislative accomplishment. Henry E. Hudson, a District Judge in Virginia, ruled that the controversial 2010 health care law’s requirement for individuals to obtain health insurance is unconstitutional.
